Anti Harassment policy

Code of Conduct

Introduction

This guideline aims to ensure that TechGALA Japan is a comfortable place for all participants. To ensure everyone's safety, all participants must understand various forms of harassment. Sometimes people act unconsciously; therefore, regardless of how long someone has been participating in events like this, we must all be mindful of each other. By keeping this guideline in mind, let’s create an enjoyable environment for everyone.

What is Harassment?

Harassment includes but is not limited to:
・Offensive verbal or written remarks related to gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, physical appearance, race, religion.
・Persistent interruption during conversations.
・Unjust exclusion of others.
・Condescending words or actions.
・Asserting superiority.
・Intentional intimidation.
・Stalking.
・Harassment through photography or recording.
・Inappropriate physical contact.
・Displaying sexual images in public spaces.
・Drawing attention through sexual topics.

Who Does This Apply To?

All event participants including attendees, speakers, staff, and sponsors are subject to this code. This applies not only at the event but also in communications using tools such as messaging platforms.

Expected Behavior

・Show respect: Engage with others so they can contribute positively and productively with their skills and enthusiasm (whether technical or otherwise). Use "yes/and" instead of "no/but" when responding.
・Recognize value: Everyone's ideas, skills, and contributions—including your own—are valuable. You may encounter different opinions; appreciate each other's contributions and enjoy those differences.
・Listen actively: Communication isn't just about talking; listening is equally important. Participants are encouraged to listen more than they talk.
Engage in dialogue: Don't assume everyone shares the same context; encourage dialogue.
・Be responsible for your actions: Avoid discrimination, slander, or harassment—including gestures and online discussions (e.g., on X (formerly Twitter), Slack). Also ensure that your display name/avatar/background complies with laws (especially copyright) and this code of conduct (especially regarding harassment).
・Understand cultural/personal backgrounds: We come from different cultures and backgrounds; something that doesn’t bother you might be inappropriate for someone else. If unsure about what’s appropriate—ask!

Unacceptable Behavior

・Offensive language: Harmful language related to gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, illness/disability, appearance/race/religion/age/socioeconomic status is unacceptable—including intentional misgendering ("he/she"). If unsure whether language is offensive—don’t use it.
・Sexual behavior: Sexual topics/comments/jokes/images are unacceptable—don’t make assumptions about others' gender based on appearance nor engage in unsolicited physical contact (including text messages/emojis).
・Disruptive behavior: Disrupting presentations/events with unrelated comments/questions—or encouraging excessive alcohol consumption—is unacceptable.
・Encouraging bad behavior: Supporting/encouraging unacceptable behavior is equivalent to committing it yourself.
