With foundations in Earth science and crystal engineering, Maruyama has studied diverse crystalline systems through the lens of crystal growth, including biominerals produced by living organisms, protein crystals relevant to drug discovery, pharmaceutical polymorphs, and semiconductor materials. Inspired by Earth science and meteorite research, she pioneered an approach to investigate crystallization in urinary stones, linking fundamental knowledge of how crystals nucleate, grow, and transform to stone prevention, drug development, and advanced materials.
