Beyond the Screen: When Skin and Brain Become the Interface

From an era of tapping a screen with our fingers to one in which our skin and brain themselves become the interface—and the body’s very abilities are extended. In a world where touch and sensation are shared digitally, where brain and machine connect directly, and where physical ability itself is expanded and made remote, how far can the boundary of “the self” reach? This session illuminates that shift from three frontiers. Skin—Emi Tamaki, a pioneer in transmitting touch and bodily sensation. Brain—Junichi Ushiba, a leader in brain–machine interface (BMI) research that links brain and machine so intention alone can move it. Body augmentation—Kouta Minamizawa, who is opening the field of “embodied media,” designing touch and extending the body’s senses and abilities across distance. Guided by moderator Yuta Hagiwara (CEO of PREVENT), who works at the intersection of medical data and human health, they sketch a new relationship between humans and technology beyond the screen.
