Rieko Komiyama

Rieko Komiyama was born in Tokyo in 1977. After completing her master’s degree at Waseda University Graduate School, she began her career as a secretary to a member of Japan’s House of Representatives. She later joined Benesse Corporation, where she served as secretary to the Chairman, among other roles.
Since 2015, she has served as Director of the Study Sapuri Educational AI Research Institute and concurrently as Professor at Tokyo Gakugei University Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on education, technology, and entrepreneurship, exploring how to cultivate the uniquely human abilities that remain irreplaceable in the age of AI.
Advocating for experiential learning that values real-world practice, sensory awareness, and embodied knowledge, she also trained at Sushi Ginza Onodera, completing the Sushi Ginza Onodera Academy’s professional sushi chef course.
Her major publications include Transforming Curiosity into Learning: How to Nurture the “Why?” and “How?” (Discover 21, 2025) and the co-translated volume Educational AI and the Transformation of 21st Century Learning (Kitaoji Shobo, 2020).
