Professor & Dean of GSES, Nagoya University

A somewhat unconventional researcher who weighs cities.

Hiroki Tanikawa is Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Nagoya University, Japan. For nearly 30 years, he has studied the “weight” and “metabolism” of cities by analyzing material stocks and flows in the built environment. Using GIS and AI, his research explores urban growth, aging, and resource circulation from local to global scales. His ultimate goal is to promote a stock-based society that values and maintains existing resources, contributing to Carbon Neutrality (CN), Circular Economy (CE), and Nature Positive (NP) goals.
