Since the end of the Second World War, Japan has achieved remarkable development and grown to become the world’s second-largest economy.

Once hailed as ‘Japan as Number One’, it has led the world in many industries, including electronics, motor vehicles and semiconductors.

However, over the past 35 years, a sense of resignation—that ‘it’s no use trying anyway’ or ‘nothing will change even if we try’—has spread throughout Japan, and we are gradually losing our courage and hope. That is precisely why now is the time to rise up once more. For the sake of our children, the younger generation, our subordinates and our colleagues—for the sake of those who are important to us as they navigate the society of the future—we must make Japan a country that is more prosperous than it is today, and one where people can face challenges with hope.

To that end, what must we change, and what challenges must we take on? Drawing on data and insights from the front line, we will speak frankly about Japan’s current position and its future.
